GF board votes to expel student on second drug offense
The Green Forest School Board voted to expel a high school student for a second drug offense at a special called meeting Thursday.
Superintendent Matt Summers said that he was recommending expulsion because the student had violated the student code of conduct with a second drug offense. He said high school principal Terry Darnell had sent a letter to the student's parents informing them of the reasons for the expulsion recommendation.
The parents requested a closed session for the expulsion hearing.
After returning to open session, the board voted 5-0 to approve the expulsion recommendation.
Summers said board member and Green Forest Police Chief John Bailey recused himself from the hearing because of a potential conflict of interest as a law enforcement officer.
"He did not hear the case or vote on it," Summers said.
Also at the meeting, the board voted approve the annual Statement of Assurance. Summers said the statement is to inform the Arkansas Department of Education that the school district is in compliance with all sections of Arkansas Code.
"The deadline for submission is Oct. 15, so we added that tonight to get it in on time," he said.
The board also voted to accept the resignation of Gabriella Salgado. The board then voted to employ Heather McLoud and add Lindsay Turner, Debra Cleghorn, Hannah Doty and Tammy Wilson as tutors for the K-8 After School Tutoring Program.
The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the high school library.
