Lady Bobcats win 5-set thriller
In-game adjustments can be the key to getting victories. That was the case on Sept. 27 when the Berryville Lady Bobcats defeated Pea Ridge 19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12. After a first-set loss, Berryville coach Kristin Whetham made some adjustments and it paid off for the Lady Bobcats.
"We moved around defensively a little bit and changed some things up around the net as far as how our blocking goes," Whetham said. "We made some minor tweaks to that. My blockers were getting tired. They weren't getting to the blocks and that put us in bad position as far as receiving their hits. We made those adjustments and the girls responded well."
Leading 2-1 going into the fourth set, the Lady Bobcats had Pea Ridge on the edge of elimination, leading 19-14 in the fourth set, but Berryville enabled the Lady Blackhawks to make a comeback and force a fifth set.
"We kind of shut down toward the end of the game and couldn't get anything to go our way," Whetham said.
Berryville got out to a 10-5 lead in the final set, but the Lady Blackhawks fought back to tie the game at 11 before Berryville went on to win, 15-12. Whetham was encouraged to see the Lady Bobcats fight back to win the fifth set after a tough fourth-set loss.
"I was really proud of the girls for not quitting," Whetham said. "They could have easily given up and quit, which is something we tend to do sometimes. We didn't do that last night. I think that showed a lot of character in them and hopefully they keep on fighting now. They know they can do it and they won't quit. That can help us get to state, which is where we want to be at the end of the season."
On Thursday, Berryville defeated Alpena in straight sets.
