Tigers look to repeat in 2016
The Green Forest boys cross country team will be looking to repeat as state champions from a year ago. Some say that going for the second consecutive championship is more difficult than the first, but the Tigers return all five of their top five finishers at the Class 3A state cross country meet last year. This includes Patrick Hunter, Gabriel Ramos and Jacob Thompson, all of whom were all-state runners last year. With everyone returning, coach Bradley James is excited to see how his team will do as the season begins.
"We lost a couple of people, but we have a talented group of people back," James said. "We have a lot of experience coming back, along with our all-state runners that we had. The boys team looks really strong and we hope to repeat again."
Karina Maravillas, who will be a sophomore this year, was also an all-state runner a year ago. James hopes Maravillas can lead the Lady Tigers moving forward this year.
"The girls team looks better," James said. "We did lose a few girls, but we have Karina coming back and a talented group of freshmen that should be able to move up as soon as they are ready to do that. Hopefully they will be able to compete and be higher in the rankings. It looks pretty good for both teams."
James said it's important that Green Forest is performing its best in November and James said there are things he can do to get his runners progressively better leading up to that point.
"Right now we have to keep the kids healthy and keep getting the miles under their legs and continue working on a lot of individual things like pacing," James said. "We will hit the training hard, but we want to keep everyone healthy and work up to it. We just want to get better each week."
Green Forest's season starts Saturday, Sept. 3, at Shiloh Christian.
