Traveling memorial to be displayed at GF high school

Friday, June 10, 2016

The Arkansas Fallen Heroes Traveling Memorial will be on display at Green Forest High School from Sunday, June 12, through Saturday, June 18.

The final day of the display will coincide with the annual Rat Race, which will start and end at the high school on June 18. The Rat Race honors Green Forest native Tommy Ratzlaff, a Navy SEAL who was among 31 men killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan in August 2011.

The Arkansas Fallen Hero Traveling Memorial was founded in October 2005, by Rob Hopper of Wynne. Hopper's youngest son, Marine Lance Cpl. Brian Chase Hopper, was killed in a helicopter crash in 2005 in Iraq.

Rob Harper purchased a 3-foot-by-5-foot flag for each Arkansas Fallen Hero and created a traveling memorial flag field. People are able to walk among the flags and read the biographies of the heroes that are honored.

In May 2014, Arkansas Run for the Fallen began displaying this memorial flag field. Arkansas Run for the Fallen is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise awareness for the native Arkansans who fought and died supporting the global war on terrorism. The purpose is also to provide support, hope and healing to families grieving the death of a loved one in military service.

Donations to Arkansas Run for the Fallen are used to maintain the traveling memorial and raise awareness, honor the fallen, and support the families of the fallen.
