REX SAMUEL MCMAHAN, a resident of Alpena, Arkansas, was born May 5, 1920 in Green Forest, Arkansas, a son of Walter Blake and Lily Cleo (Buell) McMahan. He departed this life Saturday, May 7, 2016, in Harrison, Arkansas, at the age of 96 years.

He was a farmer, logger and also ran a saw mill. He was a War World II Navy Veteran. In July of 1954 at the council meeting of the Union Association of United Baptist, he confessed his call to the ministry. He served as a pastor for fifty years, as well as, evangelist for a period of time traveling not only to churches in this area but, to Missouri, Ohio and West Virginia and held revivals for the United Baptist Association. Even after retiring as a full-time pastor, if called to come and preach, he would gladly go.


He is survived by two sons, Roger Benny McMahan and wife, Cormal of Shawnee, Oklahoma; Gary Blake McMahan and wife, Wanda of Alpena, Arkansas; half-sister, Billie Carolyn (McMahan) Mitchell and husband, George of Lexington, Kentucky; half-brother, Walter Keith McMahan and wife, Ruby of Green Forest, Arkansas; son-in-law, Paul Patton of Conway, Arkansas; five grandchildren; Todd Samuel and wife Penni of Belton, Texas; Alicia Kay Gardner and husband, John of McCloud, Oklahoma; Tory Daniel and wife, Beena of Fairfax, Virginia; Elizabeth (Betsy) Michele Orme and husband, Sean of Little Rock, Arkansas; John Paul Patton and wife, Tisha of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and thirteen great-grandchildren; Candace McMahan of Muncie, Indiana; Donovan McMahan and wife, Megan of Kileen, Texas; Andrew, Chloe and Brady Gardner of McCloud, Oklahoma; Cyrus McMahan of Fairfax, Virginia; Hadden, Naomi, Emma and Josiah Orme of Little Rock, Arkansas; Tozer, Titus and Truitt Patton of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.

On August 20, 1940 he was united in marriage to Mabel Chloe Coxsey. They were married almost fifty-seven years at her death on March 19, 1997. On October 3, 1998, he married Bonnie (Spencer) Henderson, who preceded him in death on August 31, 2013. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Walter Blake and Lily Cleo (Buell) McMahan, daughter, Lily Sue (McMahan) Patton, sister, Alice B. (McMahan) Calitri and brother, Rue D. McMahan. 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Nelson's Green Forest Chapel, Green Forest, Arkansas. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 13, 2016 at Nelson's Green Forest Chapel, Green Forest, Arkansas, with Reverend Bobby Young officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Fair Grove Cemetery, Green Forest, Arkansas under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
