Not so fast: BV Board rescinds restructuring of financial department
The Berryville School Board won't be following its initial plan to restructure the school district's financial department.
In a special called meeting Friday, the board voted to rescind the plan approved on Dec. 18. Former superintendent Phil Clark presented the plan at the Dec. 18 meeting, saying the restructuring would include job duty changes and a new salary schedule for the four positions in the department. The changing salary schedules, Clark said, would cost the district $35,000. At the Dec. 18 meeting, the board agreed to hire a business manager as well.
Superintendent Owen Powell explained that the board chose to rescind the original plan to work on a new idea. The finance department, Powell said, will still be restructured.
"I had some different ideas for that," Powell said.
He outlined the plan he has in mind, saying he wants to hire a fourth person to work in the department. The big change, he said, is the salary schedules.
"[Clark] brought to [the board] an additional person but an additional pay salary, too. It was going to be a really big increase, close to $40,000," Powell said.
He said he also plans to give at least one more person in the department a 12-month contract.
"Right now we have only one 12-month contracted employee, and I plan on increasing that and having multiple people on a 12-month contract," Powell said.
The most important thing, he continued, is that the department has as much help as it needs. Powell said that will require additional personnel.
"I've called around to a lot of other schools comparable to our size, and it looks like we're a little understaffed there," Powell said.
Powell said he hopes to present his plan to the board at its next meeting on Monday, April 18.
"I want to move on it pretty quick. The changes I'm requesting are for the 2016-17 school year," Powell said.
Also on Friday, the board voted to name John McClellan interim high school principal. McClellan is the assistant high school principal and serves as the district's athletic director. Powell said he asked the board to increase McClellan's salary while he's in the role, and the board agreed to do so.
The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 18.
