Then and Now: March 25, 2016

The words above the steps pictured in Tuesday's Midweek edition identified the group in the photograph as members of the Christian Church of Berryville, which today is the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Its seeds were planted in the years after the Civil War when the deed for the property, where it still sits today, was signed in October 1871. Part of the original building is still part of the current church building, with several additions and redesigns of the entrance over the years. The church building is still pretty much recognizable as the same one in the 1955 photo but you would have to take a long look at a picture of the early building -- and look inside as well as outside -- to see how it has evolved over the decades. First Christian Church is at 306 East Church St. (Photo by David Bell/Carroll County News)
