Green Forest home destroyed in fire

Friday, March 4, 2016

A Green Forest home was destroyed in a fire early Wednesday morning.

Green Forest Fire Chief Tim Howard said the fire broke out at 75 County Road 801 at 3 a.m. Wednesday. Howard said the fire lasted a little over three hours, saying no one was hurt in the blaze.

The cause of the fire, he noted, was likely lightning.

"That's not really common, but it does happen every once in a while," Howard said.

Alpena and Oak Grove's fire departments, he added, helped his team combat the fire. He pointed out that all the fire departments operate using volunteers. This, Howard said, makes small communities like Green Forest special.

"It's a good thing we've got guys in the community that want to get up that early to do something like this. Not many people would do that," Howard said.
