Howerton is geography bee champ

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Jacey Howerton, an eighth-grader at Berryville Middle School, won the school's National Geographic Bee earlier this month. Shane Wilson was the runner-up, and Erica Batres won third place.

The competition was open to seventh- and eighth-graders. In the preliminary round, students answered seven rounds of oral questions to qualify for the next level of competition. LoraGrace Hill, Lauren Compton, Batres, Wilson, Trenton Hutchison, Devin Heilfrich, Andrea Santamaria, Cecilia Doss and Howerton advanced to the final round.

In the final round, the students answered written and oral questions; some of these questions required reading a map.

Howerton will take a qualifying test to determine if she's eligible to compete in the state competition on April 1.
