GF school board gives thumbs up to property purchase
The Green Forest School Board on Monday agreed to purchase a property from Reliable Poultry for $300,000, putting the plan for a new maintenance and transportation building into motion.
Superintendent Matt Summers said the property is about 8,000 square feet and features a mechanic pit, office space, bathrooms and showers. It is located at 1003 Venture St. in Green Forest.
"That will be our new transportation and maintenance facility," Summers said.
He added that the district won't take possession of the property until June 1, 2016.
The board also accepted its six-year facilities master plan. Summers said the plan details upcoming projects throughout the district, saying construction plans such as roof repairs are addressed in it.
The board approved a $22,838 plasma apparatus purchase. The apparatus, Summers explained, cuts metal and uses intricate computer technology for various projects. He said it will be used to expand the district's technology programs, noting that the purchase came from federal funds for career education.
"We're very excited," Summers said.
The apparatus, he continued, will be delivered shortly after the end of the year.
The board accepted its new mission statement and approved a band fundraiser, as well as two student transfers out of the district. A new Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was adopted; Summers said the PTO is a more local version of the Parent Teacher Association with national ties.
"They're going to be there to support students and staff," Summers said.
The board approved a memorandum of understanding with the Eureka Springs School District, agreeing to help the district in case of catastrophe.
Eric Evans' resignation was accepted, and Jennifer Jackson was hired as a migrant paraprofessional.
The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18.
