Lady Tigers win on Senior night

Friday, October 16, 2015

GREEN FOREST -- For most Green Forest Lady Tiger volleyball players, Tuesday's home match against Flippin was just another regular season match. However, for seniors Payton Youngblood, Kelby Harness, Carley Chicas and Lexy Fernandez, it was there last. Winning in four sets, 25-17, 25-6, 22-25, 25-12, they made it one they will remember.

Down 7-12 in the first set, the Lady Tigers came charging back to tie the set at 14 thanks to kills by Harness and Carolina Moreno. After Flippin hit the ball into the net, Moreno stayed on the attack and extended the lead to 21-14. An Audrey Dickinson kill ended the set. A Sloane Coffey kill followed by an ace and dig by Youngblood helped get the Lady Tigers out to an early 13-5 lead in the second set. After that, the Lady Tigers never looked back, as a Cheyann Eagleson ace ended the set.

"We started out great tonight," Green Forest coach Trista Killingsworth showed. "I thought we showed good intensity early."

Green Forest was tied at 12 midway through the first set and aces by Youngblood helped give the Lady Tigers a 16-14 lead. A Flippin kill broke serve and as a result went on a 9-2 run, which gave the Bobcats a 23-18 lead before going on to win the set.

"It is so frustrating," Killingsworth said. "I feel like the girls get down on themselves and when they do, it is difficult for them to bounce back from it."

The Lady Tigers led 6-0 early in the first set as Harness had two early kills. Two kills by Chicas gave the Lady Tigers a 19-8 lead before a Lady Bobcat service error ended the match.

Eagleson had five aces while Youngblood had four and Coffey had three. Harness had eight kills while Moreno had six and Chicas and Dickinson each had three.

Killingsworth is very proud of what her seniors have accomplished.

"I have got to see them grow and mature since seventh grade," Killingsworth said. "It has been a true honor, but we still have more volleyball to be played."

The Lady Tigers played Izard County Consolidated on Thursday in the first round of the district tournament in Bergman.
