Berryville sweeps Carroll County Cup
GREEN FOREST -- The Carroll County Cup turned out to be a clean sweep.
Berryville's boys and girls team each recorded shutout victories over Green Forest on Tuesday. Berryville won the boys' match 5-0, and the Berryville girls beat Green Forest 7-0.
The Bobcats controlled the tempo of the boys match throughout. Berryville had four shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the match before Mario Diaz finally banged the first goal through at the 29:40 mark of the first half.
"It was a little frustrating to start, but we knew we were controlling the pace," Berryville coach Joey Curtis said.
Green Forest finally had its first scoring opportunity with under 13 minutes remaining in the half, but the shot went wide of the net. Berryville's Oliver Perez made the Tigers pay with a goal with 1:54 to go in the first half.
Green Forest's best scoring chance came with under 26 minutes remaining in the match. Green Forest's Rafael Rosales had a breakaway opportunity, but his shot went high of the net.
"We just have to keep working at it," Green Forest coach Bradley James said. "We are young and these are learning experiences."
Berryville's Sergio Escobar got a goal on a free kick with 19:38 remaining and Alex Albert scored off a rebound with 11:26 left in the match. Berryville's final goal came from Diaz with 1:13 left.
Berryville 7, Green Forest 0
Different game, same outcome. The only difference was that the Lady Bobcats pounced much earlier than the boys did, scoring four goals in the first 7:39 of the match. Berryville's Rachel Lehr scored the first goal, which slid by the goalkeeper. The second goal came from Beatriz Moras, who slipped through two Lady Tigers to score. Shaila Perez gave Berryville a 3-0 lead seconds later when her defender fell down and she scored a breakaway goal. Leslie Tellez capped the Lady Bobcats' fast start when she scored on an assist inside the penalty area.
"We came out strong," Lady Bobcats coach Aaron Hall said. "We were ready to go. I didn't like that we became a little complacent there midway through the first half, but I think that's just something you go through."
Green Forest was unable to take advantage of that complacency. The Lady Tigers only had one shot on goal in the first half and trailed 4-0 at halftime.
Tellez got her second goal of the match minutes into the second half and Perez got her second as well with 33:40 remaining in the match, which put the six-goal sportsmanship rule into effect, cutting the time in half. Lehr scored a final goal for the Lady Bobcats with 13:54 remaining in the match.
"I don't see any way we don't get in the state playoffs with this win," Hall said. "And for these girls, that's great."
Green Forest travels to Gentry on Tuesday. The girls match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Berryville will host Gentry on Friday, May 1. The girls match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
