Slow start costs Bobcats
BERRYVILLE -- The Berryville Bobcats got off to a slow start Monday afternoon against Lincoln and were never able to recover in a 9-5 loss.
Berryville's Austin Howerton had two hits and a run, while Tate Ferguson and Seth Helmlinger each had one hit and a run. Robby Broseus and Thomas Trowbridge each scored runs.
The Bobcats gave up their first run to the Wolves in the first inning on a passed ball. With a Lincoln runner on third in the second, a single brought him home for a 2-0 lead. Lincoln added four runs in the third inning.
Berryville scored in the bottom half of the second. Trowbridge drew a leadoff walk. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Broseus and Helmlinger both drew walks and Broseus scored on a double by Ferguson.
Lincoln answered in the fourth with two more runs.
Howerton started the bottom of the fourth with a double to left, then advanced to third on a passed ball. A dropped third strike put Garrett Mitchusson on base. A wild pitch scored Howerton and advanced Mitchusson to third. A Kraig Kendrick walk put runners on first and third before Mitchusson scored on a passed ball. A double play ended the inning with Lincoln leading 8-4.
Berryville added its final run in the bottom of the fifth. Helmlinger singled to center with one out. One out later, he stole second and moved to third on a Howerton single. Helmlinger came home on a wild pitch.
Lincoln scored its final run in the top of the sixth on a passed ball. Berryville hosts Blue Eye, Mo., on Friday. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
