Lady Bobcats head to regionals despite district loss
SPRINGDALE-- The second half was a killer for the Berryville Lady Bobcats in Friday's district tournament semifinal game against Prairie Grove.
After trailing by two points at halftime, Berryville was plagued by turnovers in the second half and went on to lose 49-34.
"We did what we needed to do in the first half to stay in the game," Berryville Coach Daniel Cornelison said. "We executed pretty well. It was the second half that got away from us."
After Prairie Grove capitalized on Berryville turnovers to extend its lead in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers used superb free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
"We got down going into the fourth and they just held it and went 16 of 17 from the free-throw line, so that will get you beat," Cornelison said.
Aleksei Smith led Berryville with 20 points. Hannah Noble scored seven, Hayley Skelton had four, Whitney Howerton added two and Ally Teague added one.
Despite the loss, the Lady Bobcats will advance to the regional tournament in Pottsville this week,
Berryville will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against the loser of Monday's 4A-4 district tournament final between Ozark and Pottsville.
Cornelison said the Lady Bobcats will have a tough matchup regardless of who they face.
"Ozark is the No. 1-ranked team in the state, I believe," Cornelison said. "So we either play the No. 1-ranked team in the state on a neutral floor or Pottsville on their home floor, who finished second in their own conference."
