BV Wrestler wins 120-pound title; Bobcats finish fourth as team

LITTLE ROCK -- Ethan King won the state championship in the 120-pound class at the Arkansas state wrestling tournament Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, but the Bobcats fell short of bringing home the team championship.

Berryville finished fourth in the 1A-5A division.

Central Arkansas won the 1A-5A team tournament with 197 points. Greenbrier finished second with 193 points, Little Rock McClellan finished third with 181.5 points and Berryville finished fourth with 173 points. Rogers won the 6A-7A tournament with 203.5 points. Heritage finished second with 194 points.

Here are the results of matches involving Berryville wrestlers in the double-elimination tournament.

106 pounds: Berryville's Noah Forke pinned Pulaski Academy's Spencer Davis in the first period. Destiny Nunez of Beebe pinned Forke in the first period of the semifinal match. Forke pinned Christia Woolery in the third period of his first consolation match. Forke pinned Sean Harlan from Greenbrier in the third period for a third-place medal. Nunez won the championship, becoming the first female to win an individual championship.

113 pounds: There were no Berryville wrestlers competing in this weight class. Hunter Jones of Little Rock Christian Academy won the championship.

120 pounds: Berryville's Ethan King won his first-round match 14-0 over Wyatt Keech of Central Arkansas Christian. King pinned Brandon Ashcraft of Woodlawn in the first period of his quarterfinal match. King pinned Nabil Bhimani of Maumelle in the second period in the semifinals. In the championship, King won 4-0 over Greenbrier's Rylan Howard.

126 pounds: Berryville's Jordan Burrell was pinned in his first-round match against Tyson Hume of Woodlawn. In his first consolation match against Mathew Winston of Little Rock Christian Academy, Burrell won by forfeit. In Burrell's second consolation match, he was pinned in the second period by Justin Brannon of Beebe. Hume went on to win the championship.

132 pounds: Berryville's Keaton Hoft lost to Preston Barnett 13-8 in his quarterfinal match. In his first consolation match, he defeated Bret Sherkenbach of Maumelle 7-6. In the third place match, he got revenge on Barnett, defeating him 8-5. Grant Webb of Greenbrier won the championship.

138 pounds: Berryville's Dakota Hurt pinned Adrian Shurtleff of Glen Rose in the second period. In Hurt's semifinal match against Nick Noel of Pulaski Academy, Hurt was pinned in the first period. In Hurt's first consolation match, he lost 15-8 to Stephen Denny from Ashdown. Noel went on to win the championship.

145 pounds: Berryville's Kris Grile pinned Tyler Gulledge of Woodlawn in the second period of his first-round match. Grile won 11-9 over Joseph Lewis of McClellan in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Grile lost 8-0 to Kevin Knox of Little Rock Christian Academy. In Grile's first consolation match, he pinned Owen Hadden of Episcopal in the second period. In the third-place match, he faced Lewis again but lost, 8-6. Knox went on to win the championship.

152 pounds: Berryville's Griffin Payne pinned Garrett Cruce of Mountain View in the first period of his first-round match. Payne pinned Luke Rivera of Maumelle in the first period. Payne won on disqualification in the semifinals against Aaron Nunez of Beebe. James Noel of Pulaski Academy won the championship, as Payne was too injured from the semifinal match to compete in the championship.

160 pounds: Berryville's Travis Hand forfeited his first-round match to Garrett Grier of Beebe. Hand forfeited his consolation match to Ontario Conway of Des Arc. Adrian Brown of McClellan won the championship.

170 pounds: Robert Allen won his first-round match by forfeit. Allen was pinned in the third period by Ryan Smith of Greenbrier in his quarterfinal match. In his first consolation match, he pinned Shiloh Christian's David Lundstrum in the first period. In the next consolation match, Allen pinned Ashdown's Sid Young in the third period. In the next consolation match, Allen pinned Ma' Laizh Surrell of McClellan in the second period. In Allen's third-place match, he faced Smith again, and lost 12-7. Layne Hatcher of Pulaski Academy won the championship.

182 pounds: Berryville's Brian King won his first-round match by forfeit. He pinned Drew McCool of Greenbrier in the first round of his quarterfinal match. King was pinned by Jon Andrews of Central Arkansas Christian in the first period of the semifinals. King lost his first consolation match, 9-7, to Bo Smith of Beebe. King pinned Braden Gill of Bismarck in the second period to claim fifth place. Andrews won the championship.

195 pounds: Berryville's Luis Klaus was pinned by Elijah Veasey of Pulaski Robinson in the first period of his first-round match. Klaus lost his first consolation match to Gus Powers of Episcopal. Braden Zini of Central Arkansas Christian won the championship.

220 pounds: Berryville's Garrett Record pinned Josh Mitchell of Beebe in the first period of his first-round match. Record pinned Pulaski Academy's David Steele in the first period of the quarterfinals. Record defeated Austyn Brawley of Greenbrier 7-0 in the semifinals. Record lost to Trent Lewis of McClellan 10-4 in the championship.

285 pounds: Berryville's Jaytee Santisteban won his first-round match against Daniel Slamenski on forfeit. In the quarterfinals, Santisteban was pinned by Zach Ellis of Gentry in the second period. In Santisteban's first consolation match, he lost to Raymond Ivory, 8-5. Jason Kidder of Central Arkansas Christian won the championship.
