Virginia R. Humphreys, a resident of Holiday Island, Arkansas, was born April 12, 1915 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the second daughter of Joseph Paul and Edna Pearl (Walden) Ricks. She passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the age of 99 years.
Virginia lived in Hutchinson until the late 1970's, and was a vital force in her extended family, a close circle of friends, and the community at large. She was especially active in P.E.O. and Grace Episcopal Church. In 1972 she became the first woman to serve as senior warden of her parish. When she moved to Holiday Island after the retirement of her husband Richard, she was as fully engaged in her new community as she had been in Hutchinson. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, P.E.O., and the Holiday Island Fire Department Auxiliary. She was throughout her adult life a magnet for family and friends scattered throughout the United States and beyond.
She is survived by a sister, Josephine Armstrong; her son, Stephen & wife Gail; three grandchildren, Cymbre Van Fossen, Michael, and Brian; three great grandchildren, Claire, Stephanie, and Carter Van Fossen.
On May 31, 1937 Virginia was united in marriage with Richard Humphreys, who preceded her in death after 64 years of life together. She is also preceded in death by her infant son, James, and two sisters, Elizabeth and JoAnne.
Memorial services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the St. James Episcopal Church in Eureka Springs, AR with the Reverend Betsy Porter officiating. No flowers, please.
