ES names Mr. and Miss Basketball

In the midst of the Eureka Springs boys and girls basketball teams sweeping Oark on Homecoming Friday night, Trevor Lemme and Hayden Mayfield were named Mr. and Miss Basketball.

Lemme and Mayfield are both seniors and were voted by their teammates to receive the award.

"You know everyone is out here practicing in the morning and after school," Lemme said. "I have been playing team basketball since I was a little kid and for my fellow players to vote me as Mr. basketball, I feel truly honored."

Eureka Springs Coach, Brian Rambo said he isn't surprised Lemme's teammates nominated him for the award.

"Trevor is one of those kids that the word persevere is a word that is a good word for him," Rambo said. "He is a hard worker in the weight room and he loves the game."

Lemme didn't have a favorite subject in school, until this year, when the school district hired a new teacher.

"Our English teacher is really cool and for once, I really enjoy going to English class," Lemme said.

Lemme has seen a drastic improvement from the team's first game in October and he hopes to continue seeing that improvement.

"I think our conditioning has improved greatly," Lemme said. "At the beginning of the year, we were gassed a few minutes into the quarter. Now we are getting slowly conditioned to where we can play a full game and have plenty of energy."

Once Lemme graduates, he is thinking about joining the Navy.

Mayfield has known many of her teammates since first and grade. She said the Miss Basketball award came as a surprise.

"Knowing that my teammates had looked up to me and respected me on the court like that is pretty cool," Mayfield said. "To know I was a leader to them really meant a lot."

"Hayden is just a natural-born leader," Lady Highlanders Coach Adam Brothers said. "Sometimes she questions things I want to do, but you know it is in the team's best interest."

Mayfield is playing basketball right now, but is getting ready for a busy spring semester.

"I will be playing soccer and softball in the spring," Mayfield said. "It is my senior year and it is going fast."

Mayfield plans to attend Missouri Southern University next fall to pursue a degree in psychology.
