Children's author speaks to Berryville students

Children's author Ronda Friend spoke to students at Berryville Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Friend spoke at two assemblies and held a writing workshop for second-grade students.

Berryville Elementary School Librarian Colleen High said Friend was "very entertaining."

High explained that Friend, whose stories center around her childhood, related easily to the children.

"I think the kids really did enjoy it. Even the kindergartners seemed to be quite captivated by her performances," High said.

Friend's work includes songs, recipes, poems and a character lesson. She read from the book series "Down on Friendly Acres," which recounts the basics of farm life in the 1960s. She sold and autographed her books after the assemblies and left books behind for more students to purchase. High said that she will be sending home order forms with students if they'd like the series but had no access to money at the assemblies.

These kind of assemblies are sporadic, according to High. Because authors sometimes ask for more money than the school can afford, she said, authors speak periodically to the students.

"It just depends on how things work out," she said.
