Smiths to be honored for work with food bank, church
BERRYVILLE -- Lieu and Helen Smith will be honored at a reception at the Community of Christ Church in Berryville on Sunday, June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. They will be recognized for their many years of service both to their church and to the local community.
The Smiths are well-known in Berryville for their long-time work with the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank. They were instrumental in getting the food bank established at its current location on Bunch Springs Road, and have served the food bank in various capacities for more than 17 years. They have become the face of the food bank to the Wednesday clients -- the Smith's scheduled day to work at the bank -- as well as to many residents in the Berryville area.
The Smiths have been active in the Community of Christ Church -- at the Berryville congregation and previously in the St. Louis region, where they lived before moving to this area.
They are beloved by all in the church who know them, according to Jan Weiberg, pastor of the Berryville Community of Christ. "Lieu and Helen aren't retiring, so our friends at the food bank and throughout the community will continue to see them in their active roles," she said. "It's just that, as we look at the body of work and contribution they have made both to our church and the local community, we felt it important to pause and thank them for the difference they have made in our lives. This will be a joyous celebration."
The public is invited to attend the reception in honor of the Smiths. The Community of Christ Church is located on the corner of Orchard and Carter streets, across from the hospital. For details contact Dale Hunter, 870-350-5650.
