Ozark erupts for five runs in ninth inning to top Cats
BERRYVILLE -- Ozark scored five runs with two out in the top of the ninth inning to beat Berryville 9-4 Wednesday afternoon.
Tate Ferguson turned in a gem on the mound for the Bobcats (6-5, 0-2 in 1-4A Conference), allowing eight hits in eight innings, walking none and striking out 11.
Avery Logan recorded two outs in the ninth before Justus Summers coerced a strikeout to cap the inning.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but failed to push a run across. Ferguson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Seth Helmlinger followed suit and Austin Howerton walked to give Berryville a chance. But consecutive strikeouts by Davis Stone, Johnny Arnold and Ethan Chapin ended the threat.
Helmlinger led the Cats at the plate with a double and single while Logan and Ferguson added a double each. Chapin added a single.
Berryville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Summers scored after getting hit by a pitch and crossing home plate on an Ozark error following a Ferguson double. Helmlinger doubled Ferguson home to set the table.
The Hillbillies answered with three runs in the top of the second and maintained the advantage until the bottom of the third when the Cats struck for two more runs for a 4-3 lead.
Thomas Trowbridge reached on an error to start the inning and went to third on Logan's double. Two batters later, Helmlinger singled to left field to score Trowbridge and Logan followed on an overthrow.
Ozark knotted the score in the top of the fourth and the game remained tied until the ninth.
