*UPDATED - HI Chamber to host Spring Festival
HOLIDAY ISLAND -- The Holiday Island Chamber of Commerce will kick off the season of fun with a Spring Festival in the Veterans Memorial Park on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. The event is free, although there is a charge for the BBQ dinner.
A number of fun activities are planned over the two days. More than 20 vendors will be set up in the Park to offer samples of their wares and specials on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Holiday Island Art Guild will also have their work on display in the building across from the fitness center.
Saturday will be the main event, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Events start with a pet parade at 11:30 a.m.. Dress up your pet and compete for best in show and a free meal.
Entertainment begins at 1 p.m. in the amphitheater with Lonnie and Friends, who play a mix of country, bluegrass and soft rock. The Holiday Island Singers will perform at 4 p.m. with a preview of their upcoming concert. Leon Troyer will be on hand at 5 p.m., fresh from his Route 66 tour.
"His collection of Route 66 songs that he has written and recorded will bring back many memories of the Mother Road," said festival organizer Jim Sexton.
The BBQ contest and meal will begin at 2 p.m., with barbecue ribs and chicken prepared by local merchants. They will accompany their entries with a complete meal of beans, coleslaw and potato salad as they compete for your vote.
Cost of the meal is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
