MOUNTAINBURG -- One day after extending its season with a 39-34 win over Decatur in the opening round of the 1-2A District Tournament at Mountainburg, the Lady Highlanders suffered a season-ending 45-11 loss to Hackett on Wednesday.

Abbey Moore led the Lady Highlanders with six points while Taylor Osterhout had five.

The Lady Highlanders finished the season with a 12-19 record after winning just four games last year. Eureka Springs finished one win shy of advancing to next week's regional tournament.

"We wanted to get to regionals," Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo said. "We just came up one game short. If we would have won an extra game in the regular season it would have been easier in the tournament."

Despite the shortfall, Rambo was pleased to see his team triple last year's win total.

"It just shows how close we were," he said. "We came 10,000 miles from where we were. We had a good team meeting yesterday. I told them nobody believed in us at the beginning of the year. We definitely exceeded expectations."

With winning season under his belt at previous jobs, Rambo said this year's experience topped the charts.

"This is probably the most gratifying season I have ever had," he said. "I have worked harder in the last two years than I ever have and so have the kids. The coaches and parents see it. It says a lot about the character of these kids."

Rambo loses two seniors, Osterhout and Jazmin Urioste, for next year.

"I thanked the seniors after the game," Rambo said. "But this season is over. We have to start preparing for next year. We have to have some balance. We are going to be young and really thin. We will only have about seven girls total. Have to be smarter. But we are still learning how to play."
