Berryville High to host choir camp soon, offer 'singing Valentine's'

BERRYVILLE -- The Berryville High School choir is hard at work raising money to take 67 of its 85 members to Chicago. The summer trip is a joint venture with the high school band.

Between the choir, band, directors, and chaperones, the group will total more than 180, making it the largest group to ever travel to an out of state competition.

Once in Chicago, choir and band ensembles will compete in the Dixieland Classic Music Festival, a premier competition with nationally-known judges.

The travelers will also experience the best music, art, and museums the Windy City has to offer -- even taking a lunch cruise on Lake Michigan.

But all this adventure and learning doesn't come free. Each student and chaperone must contribute $450 toward the four-day trip. Some students have earned all their trip funds already. However, Choir Director Donesa Mann said most still needed at least $200.

Mann said the recent production of "Annie" had been a huge success, earning the choir nearly $6,000 to be put toward the trip. The students have raised another $6,000 this year through the concession stand they operate at football and soccer games.

But, even with this progress, the choir students still must earn another $23,000 to make their Chicago dreams come true.

Mann said students hoped to narrow the gap with three fund raisers planned for the spring semester.

The first of these is the Razzle Dazzle Elementary Show choir camp, which will be held after school from Feb. 4 to 7 in the elementary and intermediate school music rooms.

Students enrolled in the camp will stay until 5 p.m. for a snack and to learn a song and dance. The students will then get the chance to perform what they've learned on the nights of Feb. 8 and 9, at the senior high basketball game and Valentine Review.

Mann, choir members, and adult volunteers will supervise and instruct the students. The cost for the camp is $35, which includes a commemorative T-shirt. Registration forms are available online here: and the forms also will be sent home with students and are available at the elementary and intermediate school offices.

Community members can also support the choir by sending a "singing valentine" to someone they love. On Valentine's Day, small ensembles from the choir will act as "cupids for hire," delivering a flowers, candy, personalized notes, and romantic serenades.

The cost for the service is $5 on campus and $10 in town. Special arrangements and pricing may be available for out-of-town deliveries. Order forms are available on our website at, at all Berryville schools, in the choir office or on the Berryville CATS Facebook page.

Finally, the Junior High Choir will perform a musical on the weekend of Apr. 6. A formal announcement and details will be published in the coming weeks.
