Berryville wins home opener against Eureka Springs
BERRYVILLE -- Berryville improved to 4-3 overall with a 68-45 rout of Eureka Springs Friday night in the second round of the Carroll County Hardwood Challenge at Bobcat Arena.
More importantly, the Cats treated the fans to a quality performance in the home opener.
Austin Carr lit up the scoreboard for 20 points as the Cats turned a 10-10 first quarter into a second half thumping of the Highlanders (6-9).
"They came out ready to play," Carr said. "I thought we did too. But we could have played better defense. And there is nothing better than playing in front of your fans for the first time of the season."
Carr found the friendly confines to his liking, nailing two 3-pointers early in the first period and finishing with four overall.
"I am used to this gym," he added. "It's tough to open the season with six straight road games."
Berryville returns to Bobcat Arena to square off against Green Forest, which beat Eureka Springs Thursday night and dropped a 61-53 decision to Gentry Friday night at Fred Grimm Gym.
"It's going to be a dogfight," Carr said. "It always is."
After scoring eight points in the opening period, Carr added seven in the second as the Bobcats outscored the Highlanders 29-14 for a 39-24 lead at the half.
"We played well at times," said Eureka Springs coach Nolan Helder. "I think it got away from us in the end when their depth overcame us."
Eureka Springs' Josh Premeau scored all 10 points for the Highlanders in the first period and finished with 23 to lead all scorers. Tanner Allee finished with 14.
Donnie Hoppe added 12 for Berryville which had 11 players mark the score book, including Cody Powell, who had 10 off the bench.
