Breaking: Davis wins HISID seat by four votes

Tuesday, December 4, 2012

HOLIDAY ISLAND -- In a very close election for one Holiday Island Board of Commissioners seat, Greg Davis beat out Ron Griswold by only four votes at Tuesday night's count, Davis receiving 227, and Griswold 223 votes. Four ballots were discounted due to write-ins for Gary Hanson. There are no provisions in HISID elections to count write-in votes.

District election commissioner Regina Reynolds said 454 ballots were counted, and of those, 14 absentee ballots were mailed out, with all 14 returned. She reported 326 people had completed early voting. It took the staff half an hour Tuesday night to count the votes and match results through two countings.

Had the four write-in voters voted for Griswold, the results would have been a tie, and there is no provision for what to do in that situation, said District Manager Gerald Hartley.

"I have not seen any provision in HISID code for a runoff," he said, "and Holiday Island is not subject to state election procedures. I don't know how we would have handled that."

The board will hold a special meeting Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, at 9 a.m., to swear in Davis and to elect officers for the coming year.
