Two nominated for open HISID board positions
HOLIDAY ISLAND -- Two candidates have been nominated to fill the Holiday Island Board of Commissioners seat soon to be vacated by Linda Griswold.
The nominations were handed in at a special meeting on Oct. 15.
Griswold, who currently chairs the board, is the only commissioner who will not continue into the new year.
One of the two people nominated to replace Griswold is her husband, Ron, who was nominated by Dick Smith.
Griswold will compete for the position with Greg Davis, who was nominated at Monday's meeting by Gerald Cochran.
Property owners in attendance at the meeting were allowed to make one nomination each, with the stipulation that the nominee had to be a resident property owner.
District Manager Gerald Hartley said those nominated still had to be vetted by district attorneys to ensure they were eligible to serve.
Assuming they make the cut, the candidates will be placed on the ballots for the district elections -- to be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Island district office at 110 Woodsdale Drive.
After being nominated on Monday, Griswold and Davis drew straws to determine who would appear first on the ballot. Griswold drew the No. 1 position.
Each individual property owner will have one vote in the election, regardless of the number of properties owned.
To be eligible to vote, one must be a property owner of record as of Nov. 1, 2012. Verification of ownership will be made on election day.
Trusts can designate two people to vote, and the first two names on the deed of a multiple ownership property may vote, also.
Absentee ballots may be obtained by individual request by sending a letter to the district at Election Clerk, 110 Woodsdale Drive, Holiday Island, AR 72631. The request should include the lot, block, and unit of property owned.
Following the nomination meeting, absentee ballots will be mailed out and must be received by the district no later than 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 to be valid.
Early voting will take place from Nov. 6 through Dec. 3 at the district office.
