Bobcats woes continue with shoutout loss

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

PRAIRIE GROVE -- Berryville was shut out for the second consecutive week with a 48-0 loss to 1-4A Conference foe Prairie Grove Friday night.

The Bobcats (1-5, 0-4) have now been stymied for 10 straight quarters, dating back to the second quarter against Ozark on Sept. 28. The Cats suffered a 40-0 loss to Farmington the week before.

Berryville coach Eric Daniel said the Bobcats played well defensively, despite the points surrendered.

"We played pretty well...just gave up some big plays," Daniel said. "It wasn't a situation where they ran up and down the field and scored at will. But, we have to find a way to move the football and score some points."

Deonte Payton led the stagnant offense with 72 yards on 17 carries. Payton and Ethan Chapin had 17 attempts each with Chapin adding 52 yards. But that was all Berryville could muster as the Cats were 1-of-11 through the air. Richard Webb caught the only pass, a 22-yarder from Cody Powell.

Blake McCullough turned in a gem on defense, recording 15 total tackles, including 10 solo stops from his defensive line position. Chapin had five solos and two assists while Brett Sooter, Jerry Valdez and Kraig Kendrick recorded a pair of solos and five assists each.

The Bobcats now look to Friday's home game against Gentry (1-6, 0-4). Berryville would like to return the favor of last year's 33-8 loss at Gentry.

"We gave away four fumbles last year," Daniel said. "We fumbled twice inside the 10. We should match up with them pretty well this year. We are about the same as far as athleticism and play about the same number of kids."

The Bobcats will welcome back junior defensive back Alec Jones, who will return to his free safety position after missing the last three games.
