Shell retires from U.S. Air Force, is a Berryville native

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Lt. Col. James R. "Jim Bob" Shell, a native of Berryville, retired from the United States Air Force on June 31. He most recently had served as the Chief Scientist for the Innovation Directorate at the Space Innovation and Development Center, Schriever Air Force Base, Colo.

Shell was commissioned in 1992 upon graduation from the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He has served in various assignments including the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, Air Force Research Lab and the National Reconnaissance Office.

Prior to assuming his most recent position, Shell was the Technical Director of the joint NRO/AFSPC Space Protection Program. Shell is a Master Acquisition and Space and Missile Officer.

Shell's education and training include a Bachelor's in Physics from the United States Air Force Academy in 1992, Master's in Physics from Wright State University in Ohio in 1995, Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 1996, Air Command and Staff College in 2005, and Doctorate in Imaging Sciences from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in 2005.

Shell's assignments have been Aerospace Power Analyst, Wright-Patterson AFB; Chief of the Laser Effects Team, Kirtland AFB; Lead of Vulnerability Experiments, Kirtland AFB; Chief of Advanced Aerospace Materials Branch, Washington, D.C.; AFIT student at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y.; Deputy Chief of Advanced Payloads Branch, Chantilly, Va.; Technical Director of Assessments and Engineering Office, Chantilly, Va.; Deputy Director of Innovation Directorate, Schriever AFB, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Chief Scientist of Innovation Directorate, Schriever AFB, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Major achievements and decorations of Shell include Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Shell is a graduate of Berryville High School. He is married to Donna Hammond Shell and has five children: Kristen, Trey, Jillian, Allison, and Henry.

He is the son of Jim and Pat Shell of Berryville and Danny and Joyce Stone Bolinger of Huntsville. He is the grandson of Ethyl Shell of Hamburg, the late Jack Shell Sr., and the late Douglass and Grace Stone of Hamburg.
