Phillips' class read the novel "Fahrenheit 451," which tells about the importance of books, and afterward, the class came up with a project to promote literacy in children and the presented their idea to the foundation. In turn, CCCF granted the class an award of $420.
"The class used the grant money to purchase books for the entire second grade and presented them with the books at the end of the school year," said Phillips. "My students encouraged the second-graders to read over the summer, in hopes that they would become lifelong readers."
The award was presented to the class at the end of the 2011-12 school year.
