BERRYVILLE -- Unless you had a vested interest in one or the other Cal Ripken championship games last Thursday you would have been hard pressed to decide whether to watch the major league game or the minor league game.

Both eventual champions -- the major's BV Bobcats and the minor's BV Warriors -- appeared to have their games easily put away early on.

But the Bobcats' opponent, the Royals, and the Warriors' opponent the Tigers, made late-game surges.

The Tigers were down by a score 14--4. However in spite of a last-inning run they came up short in a 14--10 loss. The key to the game, said Warriors' coach Vic Kennett, was the hitting.

"Everyone was hitting the ball very well," he said.

Likewise, the Bobcats were strong throughout the game. But a late rally by the Royals made for an exciting game -- actually nail-biting to those pulling for one team or the other.

In the last inning, the home team Bobcats made the last out and claimed the title 8--7.

Next up are the various All-star team tournaments, which conclude the season.
