THIS WEEK IN LIVE MUSIC: Filthy Still will get down 'n' dirty Friday night

Monday, May 14, 2012
Filthy Still will headline at Chelsea's on Friday, May 18. The band is sort of like Rhode Island's version of Mountain Sprout -- all sass and crass, and progressive bluegrass music with a traditional, hillbilly bent to it.

This week, if you're looking for some live music, here are my recommendations, which I will be adding to and expanding on as the week goes on:

THURSDAY

Squid and Whale Pub hosts its Pickled Porpoise Revue open jam session for all musicians on Thursday nights. Sounds like fun on a night that's slow otherwise when it comes to live music in the area. No cover. For more info, call 479-253-7147.

FRIDAY

Chelsea's features Filthy Still, which I'm gonna call the Northeast United States' answer to Mountain Sprout. They're rowdy hillbilly bluegrass rockers from Rhode Island who remind me musically of Eureka's own Sprouts as well as a little bit Trampled by Turtles -- a high compliment in my book.

Here's a video of them live:

The four-man band's song titles are all sass-and-crass, as are their lyrics on the several tracks I listened to online before writing this. But the music is progressive bluegrass with a traditional bent, at its best, and this promises to be a quality live music show.

Music begins around 9; no word on admission price.

For more info call 479-253-6723.

Chelsea's is at 10 Mountain St. in Eureka Springs.

SATURDAY

A Tulsa-based reggae/funk/rock band called Sam & The Stylees headlines at Chelsea's, and if that's your flavor of music, you should definitely add this one to your calendar; call 479-253-6723 for more info on show details.
