Letter to the editor - Carroll Electric CEO defends company
Dear CEC members,
As President/CEO of the cooperative, I ask for a brief moment of your time to address an important issue. Without regard to what is printed, blogged or sometimes said, I want to take this opportunity to set the record straight and share the truth with you.
Two years ago, a group of approximately 60 of our 69,000 members organized a protest at our annual meeting. They seek an unending debate to issues that have been fully reviewed and considered by our board of directors, management team and various outside experts.
When vegetation and trees grow to where they are in contact with and in proximity to power lines, they become a safety hazard and often are the cause of outages. Our first priority is your safety.
Unfortunately, a number of negative reports have unfairly accused the cooperative of not acting responsibly. Due to the amount of false information in the public domain, we have posted all relevant information about our program on www.carrollecc.com/go/get-the-facts.
We invite you to examine what we are doing and decide for yourself.
A survey was part of last year's annual meeting packet. Seventy-two percent of our members said reliability and affordability were their top priorities for the cooperative. Members rated the cooperative exceptionally well in each of these areas.
Our vegetation management program has reduced outages by 38 percent over the past five years and is expected to save $50-70 million over the long term. This and many other decisions by our board of directors will help keep Carroll Electric's residential rates 29 percent below the national average.
As a member, you likely fit into one or more of these categories:
1. I suspect most members reading this are simply happy the light switch works and their electric bill is manageable.
2. Some members are, justifiably at times, critical of the decisions made by the cooperative. We sincerely appreciate this feedback. We want to hear criticism directly from you so we better understand what you want.
3. Based on the positive feedback we often receive, many of Carroll Electric's members are loyal supporters of the cooperative. Thanks for recognizing the passionate efforts of more than 250 employees who take pride in serving you.
While it is important for you to have correct information from us, it is also important for us to receive correct information from you. This year's survey, included in your annual meeting packet, has a place for open comments. Please share your written comments, good or bad, about how we are doing.
It is a privilege to provide you with safe, affordable and reliable electric service.
