Highlander squads get confidence kick

The Eureka Springs boys' soccer team got its first win of the season Tuesday by defeating Flippin 3-1.

Johnston Ewing, Tyler Allee scored the first two goals for the Highlanders. But the final goal was the one for the highlight reel.

Nick Bower scored this goal on a header after receiving a well-crafted pass from David Reed.

Eureka Springs Head Coach Mike Smith said Bower's goal was a thing of beauty and the victory helps give his team some confidence.

Smith also noted that goal keepers Joey Chatterton and Will Adams made some timely saves against a Flippin offensive attack that was desperate to get back in the game.

Smith also credited Zach Cole and James Reed with playing stout defense the entire night.

"They denied the Flippin attackers in a physical hard-fought game," Smith said.

In the girls' game, the Lady Highlanders went toe to toe with the much larger school from the west on Tuesday.

Amanda Mazili scored the goal for Eureka Springs, with Aleka Heilmann notching an assist.

Eureka Springs goalkeeper Janet Lewis made some brave saves as well during the game.

"Janet did a good job of smothering the ball at the feet of the opposing strikers," Smith said

Emily Payne and Amanda Massey also played solid defense for the Lady Highlanders with Colleen Boardman and Manon Gros working hard in the midfield to win possession and link up with the Eureka forwards.

"Both of these games by our boys and girls give us a much needed boost of confidence," Smith said. "It lifts our morale because it shows that with perseverance, determination and hard work you get your just rewards."
