Voters get new polling station

BERRYVILLE -- Voters in the Eureka Springs area will have a new place to vote in the future -- St. Elizabeth's Parish Center on Passion Play Road.

That was the decision of the Carroll County Election Commission when it met Tuesday.

The move, commissioners said, was to accommodate remodeling efforts at Best Western Eureka Inn, where voters had cast ballots in recent years.

The unanimous vote made it official and effective immediately. All registered voters in Eureka Springs Wards I, 2, and 3, along with those in Johnson Springs, Packard Springs and Winona, will now vote at St. Elizabeth's.

Another polling site change was also approved. Long Creek voters will now cast ballots at the Green Forest United Methodist Church instead of the Head Schoolhouse on Ark. Hwy. 311.

That move, they say, was because of the lack of amenities at the historic one-room schoolhouse that was built many years ago.

All registered voters affected by the polling site changes will be notified by mail, commissioners said, and a one-time public notice will appear in this newspaper.

In other business, the commissioners ordered ballots for the upcoming Feb. 8 countywide election that was called to decide the fate of the Carroll County Public Facilities Board created by the quorum court to bring clean drinking water to rural residents.

All 14 polling sites will be open across the county that day. Commissioners not only decided the number of ballots to be printed, but determined how many election workers they would need that day.

The next election commission meeting will be scheduled when ballot proofs are available for review. Once that task is completed, commissioners don't expect to meet again until sometime in January.
