Service to honor local fallen soldier

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

FAYETTEVILLE -- A service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, will honor a local man killed in Iraq.

Army 2nd Lt. James Michael Goins died Aug. 15, 2004, in Najaf, Iraq. He will be honored at the Arkansas Fallen Heroes Living Memorial at the Fayetteville Veterans' Home.

The Living Memorial was initiated by Inalene Skelton as a tribute to her son, a Vietnam veteran who died as a result of the effects of Agent Orange.

A service is held the second Saturday of each month, sometimes for individual soldiers, and sometimes for groups. Last month's service, for example, honored all Korean War veterans.

More information on the Living Memorial is available at

The Patriot Guards, the Bella Vista Honor Guard, the Boy Scouts, and other veterans groups will take part in the ceremony.

Retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier Gen. Bernie Skoch is the guest speaker.

Jim and Tammy Goins said anyone unable to attend the service who would like to honor their son's memory can donate to the James Michael Goins Memorial Scholarship account at the First National Bank of Green Forest. Two scholarships to Green Forest students are given out each year in his name.
