Stone County Sheriff warns of possible scam

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

The Stone County Sheriff's Office received a call today of a possible "Scam" that might be occurring in the area.

The female caller, who owns some vacant lots in the Table Rock Lake area, received a call from an individual stating he was from a firm in Florida, and had received several inquiries from people wanted to purchase her vacant lots. He stated he could sell these lots at approximately triple the value. He assured her that all could be handled by mail, but she would need to send him a non-refundable check for closing cost.

A reminder: Due to the economy slowdown, "scams" are on the rise. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never do business such as this by phone or mail, and never send money to an unknown or unverified person.

If you receive a call from someone that you believe is not legitimate, contact your local law enforcement agency.
