Bobcats defend Arena in opening games on Monday

BERRYVILLE -- The Berryville Bobcat basketball teams opened their games of the Holiday Hoops Tournament with wins over two Missouri teams, Crane and Hollister, on Monday.

Coach Brent Compton's Bobcats handled Hollister easily, 43-29, while Coach Kristin Whetham's Lady Bobcats had a shootout with Crane, winning in the final seconds 54-52.

The Bobcats Tuesday and Wednesday games will be reported in Tuesday's issue.

Senior High Boys

Vs. Hollister, Mo.

7-8, 24-10, 34-18, 43-29

K.J. Phillips scored 10 points in the second quarter, including two threes, to wake the Bobcats up, then their tight man defense frustrated the Tigers all the way to the win.

Phillips hit three treys and finished with 13 points, while teammate John Howerton scored 11 of his 12 the second half along with 5 of 6 shooting at the line, 6 of 8 for the game.

Hollister was led by Seth Martin, who scored 8 of his 12 in the fourth quarter.

Senior High Girls

Vs. Crane, Mo.

16-10, 27-26, 41-36, 54-52

It was the best early game of the tournment, with Elise Holman scoring 12 of her 18 points the first half.

Holman was matched by Crane's Laken Walden, who refused to let her team fall behind. Walden netted 13 points the first half and 12 the second, including a two that put Crane up 46-45 with 3:10 to play.

Arel Ferguson stepped up big for Beryville, scoring 13, with none bigger than a runner for two, then 3-pointer with 1:39 to play that gave Berryville a 52-48 lead.

Crane's Taylor Cox hit four free throws to tie the game at 52-all with 1:05 to go, then Berryville's Katie Swofford hit her second big shot of the night with 52 ticks on the clock to give Berryville the win.

Swofford hit a must-have shot to end the third quarter to add to her 6 points for the game.
