Berryville seniors end season at Pea Ridge

PEA RIDGE -- Berryville Bobcat Travis McBryde carried 22 times for 103 yards to end a stellar career Friday night, but it wasn't enough to beat the Pea Ridge Blackhawks, who took a 30-12 victory.

The loss left Berryville with just one win this season, over Marshall, and a 1-9 mark after forfeiting the Carroll County Shootout game with Green Forest due to an ineligible player. That game ended in a 6-6 tie for the first time in the history of the rivalry in the third week of the season.

Ethan Rhine scored three touchdowns for Pea Ridge (2-8, 1-6-1) on short runs, then passed for 2-point conversions, with Javier Torres scoring on a 6-yard run.

Quarterback Eric Holman threw two touchdown passes to account for Berryville's scores, one to Ryan Nance for 30 yards in the first quarter, and the second a 12-yard scoring strike to Peter Acuna in the fourth quarter.

"We started out good," Bobcat head coach Bobby Bishop said. "Pea Ridge scored first, then we scored on a pass from Eric to Ryan to make it 7-7."

But defense was a different story. "We had difficulty stopping the run and we just didn't tackle well. We were down 22-6 at the half, then went to the spread second half. Travis had some good runs.

"I thought all five seniors played their hearts out," Bishop said. "Travis ran hard (12 tackles), Bryce Hostetler made lots of plays on defense (18 tackles), and Humberto Camarillo hurt his hand but showed his toughness by going back in.

"Dillon Johnson made plays in the defensive line, and Justin Smith had the most emotional game. He didn't want to finish with a loss. They all played extremely hard. I hated to see them go out with a loss."

The Bobcats finished the season with just 20 players, with Coach Bishop saying, "I've never experienced anything quite like it, with sickness and injuries. Sometimes life is like that, so we'll just go back to work."
