54th annual Saunders Memorial Shoot to be held this weekend

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

BERRYVILLE -- Everyone is welcome to the 54th Annual Saunders Memorial Shoot that will be held this week, beginning Thursday, Sept. 24, and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Luther Owen's Muzzle Loading Range and Park in Berryville.

Firing will begin Thursday at 12 noon and continue until 4 p.m. Firing hours on Friday and Saturday will be 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 8 to 10 a.m.

All shooting events are black powder only, including offhand rifle and pistol at stationery paper targets, bench rest matches, shotgun trap, and sporting clays.

Divisions in the matches are men's, women's, junior, sub-junior, and old timer's. Daily re-entries will be available for rifle and pistol.

Prizes and certificates will be awarded for all matches and aggregates.

Campgrounds at the park have water, showers, firewood, and limited electricity. There is no charge for vendors to set up on trader's row, but the merchandise must be muzzleloading related.

The Berryville Boy Scouts serve breakfast Saturday and Sunday, and lunch Friday and Saturday with a buffet Saturday evening in the original log cabin on the range.

Organizers suggest people bring their guitars, banjos and fiddles and they remind everyone that no camp fires will be allowed north of the ditch in Trader's Row.

Camping fees are $10 per campsite, plus $5 for electricity, to be paid at the Registration and Scoring Shed.

Non-camping shooters pay registration and entry fees only.

Camp fees are used to maintain and improve the range and park. Camps and trade tents may be set up anytime after 8 a.m. Tuesday preceding the shoot.

The match is sponsored by the Luther's Long Hunters Club. The range is located just northwest of the town square. Take East College Street off U.S. Hwy. 62 to the park road. For more information contact Jim Fulmer at (479) 857-5954.
