150 years since the children returned

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Phil Bolinger headed up one of two wagons as members of the Mountain Meadows Monument Foundation and the Mountain Meadows Association reenacted the 150th anniversary of the return of 15 of the 17 children who survived the 1857 Utah massacre of 120 emigrants from Carroll and Boone County. The event took place at the Old Yell Lodge and Carrollton Park southeast of Alpena on Saturday. Under wet, dreary skies, the group of children were loaded onto the wagons at the lodge as more than 50 onlookers -- many descendants of the doomed Baker-Fancher wagon train -- attended the reenactment.
