Green Forest High School Band to present concert
GREEN FOREST -- The Green Forest High School Band will hold a spring concert at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at the Green Forest Alumni Center.
The concert concludes an exciting year for the band, which has flourished under new director Billy Meré.
In his first year, Meré has taken a band which was in disarray to new heights, with awards in area competitions.
The band entertained at the Green Forest Chamber Banquet April 25, playing several ambitious selections.
The band had received an "Excellent" rating at the Springdale Region I Concert Contest March 6.
"That's a major improvement at this school," Meré said. "I'm very proud of them, and I think they deserve some recognition for their efforts and sacrifice."
Meré said all 24 band students participated. The competition included schools from across northwest Arkansas.
"This band has accomplished what hasn't been accomplished at a Region I Concert Contest by the GFHS band in years," he said.
"The kids were very enthused about the competition, excited to be a part of it, and they were ready to just go and play the best way the possibly could," he said. "Their efforts really showed that day."
As the program grows, Meré encourages new students to join the band. "Any student in fifth or sixth grade interested in joining the band needs to meet me and just let me know that they are interested," he said. "I can send a letter home with them so their parents know what the next step is for them to really be in the band."
He said new students will profit from learning music, "a language you can speak throughout your whole life."
The spring concert will include performances by the sixth-grade, seventh-grade, and high school bands. The program will include solos and duets by musicians in each ensemble.
Awards will be given for this year's achievements, and leadership positions for the 2009-2010 school year will be announced.
