Friday, August 8, 2008
ALPENA -- On Sunday, Aug. 10 a homecoming worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday with dinner following in the fellowship room of Alpena United Methodist Church.

Bro. Les and Shirley Bailey and the congregation invite friends and former members to come and worship and stay for lunch and fellowship- The Sunday Service will be "A Celebration of the Generations" that have worshipped in the church, located on Denver Street in Alpena

The history of the 1921 Methodist Church includes a time of quilting, when quilters met weekly and quilted, prayed and visited. Quilts were made for warmth and stitched with love, and many will be displayed throughout the church on Homecoming Sunday.

Marguerite Rips, celebrating nearly 95 years of age, is active in the mission work of UMW today, and remembers women of the community bringing fabric scrapes from their homes to piece together to create quilts to be sold for funds to support mission work. In the early to mid- 1900s, quilts might be sold for a few dollars, or chances to win a quilt sold for 10 cents.

One UMW 1980s quilt will be part of the treasured quilts. Jewel Sparks, Marie Collins, Hattie Mae Davis and others quilted with Marguerite for the Mission Quilt Project.
