Cross country runners earn medals, trophies at Elkins

ELKINS -- Junior high cross country runners from Eureka Springs, Berryville and Alpena made their marks at the Elkins Invitational Cross Country meet last Saturday.

The Berryville junior girls finished second and the junior boys third as a team in the 4A-5A division, with individuals earning medals for finishing in the top 16 runners.

Eureka Springs in the 1A-3A Division just had three girls running, but a passel of boys, while Alpena had one girl race for Coach Jack Edens. Edens said Kelsey Murphy finished fourth in the 1A-3A division.

Coach Ben Lairamore said Tanisha Morrell finished 12th in 16:59, earning her a medal, Kimberlee Hansen was 19th in 18:47, and Collen Boardman was 23rd in 19:33 for the junior girls.

For the junior boys, in a race with 259 runners in three divisions, three earned medals. David Reed was second in 11:58 and sixth overall in his first cross country race ever. Dustin Morrell was 14th in 13:31, and Ian Reynolds 15th in 13:34.

Other runners were Payton Trollett, 18th in 13:38, Chris Verdoot, 19th in 13:47, Alex Halper, 31st in 14:47, Joey Chatterton, 32nd in 14:57, Johnston Ewing, 34th in 15:25, Zack Cole, 35th in 15:54, James Reed, 36th in 16:02, Ben Windle, 39th in 16:35, Keaton Boardman, 40th in 16:59; Nathan Wilkinson, 43rd in 18:51, and Peyton Cleves, 44th in 21:10.

Coach Doug Scheel's junior girls took the second place trophy, with Destiny Foster leading the way in ninth place in 15:24. Alejandra Solis was 15th in 15:51, McKenna Hussey 17th in 16:03, Loryn Mercedes 19th in 16:14, Ashley McBryde 20th in 16:19, Allison Winkle 36th in 17:57, Samantha Rowland 39th in 18:13, Betzy Boche 18:36, and Mercedes Splichalk 18:59.

The junior boys were third, led by Emory Mayfield, 6th in 12:40. Ethan Steely was 10th in 12:59, Rick Porter 15th in 13:34, Gustavo Gomez 23rd in 14:25, Blake Jech 25th i 14:34, Grant Jones 29th in 14:51, Mariano Sanchez 30th in 14:52, Sergio Aguilar, 14:52, Tyler Coatney 14:54, and Caleb Hardin, 15:50.
