Fat Tire Festival rolls in July 13-15
EUREKA SPRINGS -- The 10th Annual Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival, sponsored by Induro Cycling Studios, rolls through Northwest Arkansas July 13-15.
The 2007 festival features the traditional Fatty Fest events as well as lots of new rides and competitions. Local organizer David Renko calls it "one of the most unique mountain bike destinations in the Ozarks and Central U.S. Historic charm, quality trails, beautiful scenery and good people -- Eureka Springs has it all."
The festival will kick off with a new Lucky 13 Short Track race at Harmon Park on the 13th. For those who find the usual Fatty events too daunting, this 0.6 mile course, with only 30 feet of elevation per lap, is recommended.
Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the race is at 7:00, followed by an awards ceremony and party at Sparky's Restaurant on Hwy 62E.
Saturday morning things get into high gear at Lake Leatherwood. The "Burnin' Fat Downhill" one-mile race begins at 9 a.m., with registration starting at 7:30.
The Children's Fun Ride, one of several non-competitive events, starts at 10 a.m., also at the Lake Leatherwood ball fields.
Later Saturday, Harmon Park is the scene for the "Super Fat Trials" registration starting at noon, and race beginning at 1 p.m. "XC" course pre-rides are at 2 and 5 p.m. at Harmon Park, and a "Women's Iced Tea and Lemonade Ride" starts at 4 p.m. at the Lake Leatherwood ball fields.
That night the action moves to the City Auditorium, where XC pre-registration begins at 6:30. The Fatty Film Festival starts at 7 p.m., followed by presentation of awards for the Downhill and Observed Trials events.
The XC "Race to the Lake" is set for 9 a.m., June 15. The start at Basin Park is considered one of the most epic race starts in the nation. But that's just the beginning.
"This race cannot be described," Renko said. "It must be experienced. Three miles of all-out chaotic punishment."
A children's race takes place at Lake Leatherwood at 1 p.m. The festival concludes with XC and final awards ceremonies at Lake Leatherwood at 2 p.m.
