METALTON -- A tractor accident Wednesday claimed the life of 73-year-old John Mitchell of the Metalton Community.

According to Lt. Jason Hunt, with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, emergency medical responders from St. John's ambulance service and the South Carroll County Fire Department were dispatched to the area of County Road 717 in reference to a tractor accident.

Upon arrival at approximately 2:24 p.m., he said, the subject, later identified as John Mitchell, was pronounced dead on the scene by Carroll County Deputy Coroner Kelly Miller.

Hunt said the family indicated that Mitchell had gone to brush hog a field for a friend, as he had done for the past 15 years.

"The investigation showed that the death was an accident from the tractor rolling over while Mr. Mitchell was brush hogging a steep embankment," said Hunt.

Mitchell was transported from the scene to the coroner's office, and later to Smith Family Funeral Home in Green Forest, where family members were making arrangements Thursday.
