Gladys Poppy Bell Wolven
GLADYS POPPY BELL WOLVEN of Holiday Island, formerly of Huntington Beach, Calif., was born April 23, 1933, in Verona, N.J., a daughter of Albert Joseph and Gladys Maude (Vincent) Felt. She died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Holiday Island, at the age of 74.
Ms. Wolven was a 1955 graduate of California State University in Long Beach, Magna Cum Laude. She was associate editor of the Hornspoon Literary Magazine while a student there. She later worked as the history librarian for the Anaheim Public Library.
In retirement, she was a devoted volunteer, serving her local children s literacy program and achieved the Volunteer of the Year award. Her true passion was poetry, and in 2006 she was awarded a fellowship prize and was published from the Mohoney Research Library in Shreveport, La.
On Dec. 22, 1956, she was united in marriage with Jack F. Wolven, who survives her of the home. She is also survived by two daughters, Ada E. Murdock of Anaheim, Calif; and Jacqueline F. Wolven of Eureka Springs; one sister, Madeline Ford of Cottage Grove, Ore.; one brother, Capt. Joseph Felt of Bethel, Wash.; one half sister, Margaret Sharp of Newport Richey, Fla.; three granddaughters, Sarah Bell Murdock of Huntington Beach, Calif., Kathleen Stella Murdock of Maui, Hawaii, and Paige Lorrabeth Goodman Wolven of Eureka Springs; one grandson, Sean Stuart Lerner of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and a host of other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Christopher V. Wolven.
Graveside services were to be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the Berryville Memorial Park Cemetery in Berryville, with Rev. John Burton officiating under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
