Errors in 1st sink Bobcat hopes

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

BERRYVILLE-- Errors piled up for Berryville in the first inning against Pea Ridge last Thursday, creating an 8-0 mountain for the Bobcats to climb before they ever swung a bat.

And with Pea Ridge's pitcher, Rosser, throwing smoke at 85-mph, catching up was hard to do. Pea Ridge also won a three-inning JV game, 6-2.

Special Presentation

The entire team lined up single file to present a baseball hat they had all signed to Clay and Tammy Hodgens, whose son, Garrett, played on the team last year.

Garrett was killed in a dirt bike accident last July and Coach Mark Brigance and the boys wanted to honor his memory with the presentation.

Coach Brigance presented the signed hat, then each player hugged Clay and Tammy before returning to the dugout.

"I was real proud of our kids,"?Brigance said. "They were real respectful and mature about the situation."

"Pea Ridge had a pretty sharp pitcher, throwing 85-mph, and we were a little off time to start," Coach Mark Brigance said. "Our bats got better the second time through the order."

Pitching- Edson Recinos got the loss, although he just went 1/3 inning, as four errors allowed 8 runs.

"It wasn't his fault," Brigance said. "We couldn't stop them. He only gave up two earned runs and just faced 10 batters."

Michael Hopper came in and went 6-2/3 innings with his wind-up, sidearm delivery, and faced 24 batters, had 7 strikeouts, gave up 5 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run.

"I thought Michael had a great performance,"?Brigance said. "He had two innings of 3-up, 3-down, and two innings of 4-up, 3-down pitching. He had them fooled with that sidearm. He went a lot of innings and I was proud of that."

Cody Sanders caught the game and had just one passed ball.

Hits- Curtis Chappell- 2/3, laser single, and home run off scoreboard; Colby Singer- 1/3, S; Shane Kesler- 1/3, S; Nick Correia- 1/4.
