FORT SMITH -- The Berryville boys and girls soccer teams opened their seasons on perhaps the coldest morning of the spring season last Saturday when they participated in the Fort Smith Northside tournament.

Coach Don Earnest provided the following information about the teams.

"Our defense played well all day,"?Coach Earnest said. "The boys played hard."

1st match- The Bobcats faced Fort Smith Southside in a match that ended in a 2-2 tie after Jorge Gil scored twice for Berryville. In the shootout to break the tie, Southside took the match 4-1. Nehemias Lopez was in goal and had a number of saves during the game.

2nd match- Berryville put it on Greenwood's JV team 4-0, with goals by Ermelio Trujillo, Efren Trujillo, Luis Ramirez, and Jorge Mojica. Coach Earnest said Manfredo Santizo Lopez played good defense in the back middle position.

3rd match- Berryville took another win, this time from Poteau, Okla., in a 2-0 battle. Jorge Mojica and Efran Trujillo score the goals, Jorge's in the first minute of play.

Coach Earnest said all four defenders played well in this game. They were Rudy Martinez, Jose Renteria, Manfredo Javier Perez, and Jorge Pineda, who came off the bench for Rudy. Coach also said Angel Morales played super all day.

Coach Earnest was jumping back and forth between games and didn't have as much detail about these matches, as Tom Souden was volunteering with the Lady Bobcat squad.

"The girls lost to Greenwood 3-0, then lost to Poteau 3-1,"?Coach Earnest said. "Itzel Reta scored the goal for us, with an assist from Danielle Reichenberg.

"The girls tied Van Buren 3-3, then won the match on penalty kicks, 3-2. Goals were by Liz Barrios, Reta, and Reichenberg. Samantha Paez was in goal and stopped two near goals."
