Lady Tigers sweep Leopards in 1-3A play
GREEN FOREST -- Three Lady Tiger volleyball teams swept the Alpena Lady Leopards Monday night in the first 1-3A conference action of the season.
The varsity won in three straight games, with the JV and junior high squads winning in two.
"They all play hard," Coach Kayla Madewell said about her teams. "I'm happy they got their first wins. Alpena is much improved. I was impressed."
MONDAY, AUG. 28
25-13, 25-15, 25-14
In varsity action, Alpena put up a good fight, but Green Forest's defense and ball handling were too much for the Lady Leopards.
Coach Madewell said, "I'm happy we won, but we don't seem to have the fight and fire from last year. Until we get that back, we're just another solid high school team."
Game 1- Amelia Villines got 9 points off her serve and had 2 kills, and Emily Campbell had 3 kills and 4 points off serve. Beth Campbell had a kill, Megan Bennett 2 sets and Makayla Jorgensen 3 sets, and Courtney Ruff 4 digs and Lindsay Kilbourn 2 digs.
Game 2- Jorgensen and Kilbourn both had 5 straight serves, Villines 3 kills and Beth and Emily 2 kills. Villines scored 4 points off serve, and Bennett and Jorgensen had 2 sets each. Ruff had 3 digs and Villines 2.
Game 3- Erin Robertson had 9 straight serves, Villines 2 kills, Kilbourn and Emily 1 each. Jorgensen had 2 sets, Bennett 1, Ruff 2 digs, and Beth and Emily 1 dig each.
JV- 25-11, 25-13
The JV squad stayed focused and were never challenged in this one. Allyson Goodman had 6 straight serves the first game, Misti Baker and Ruff 2 kills each, Meghan Momont 1 kill and 2 blocks, and Goodman 2 sets. Ruff scored 5 points off her serve.
In game two, Lauren Momont had 5 straight serves, Meghan 2 kills, and Campbell and Baker a kill each. Campbell scored 4 points off her serve.
JH- 25-20, 25-20
Coach Madewell was able to put a lot of players in when the team took an early lead in both games.
Carley Arnold hit 5 straight serves, and Coach said Jackie Webb leaped up, cleared the net, and hammered one down for a kill. She also said Arnold and Elizabeth Booth were exceptional setters, and that Olivia Foster, Megan Barinsky and Kara Heads were strong players.
