Rachel Bell Smith Wheatley
RACHEL BELL SMITH WHEATLEY was born in Mulberry, Kan., April 16, 1911, daughter of George Arthur Smith and Susannah Isabell (Turner) Smith. She died June 4, 2006, at the age of 95.
She moved with her parents to Carroll County in 1915. Her Mother traded a house for 84 acres, then within a year, the family moved to Oklahoma, returning to Carroll County, Concord School District, in 1927.
She married Lona Wheatley in 1928, and they moved to Oklahoma then to Kansas, returning to Arkansas during the Dust Bowl days, and lived there until she went to live with her daughter in Texas in 2005.
She was a homemaker, caregiver, worked at Philmore Canning Factory, Shahan's Restaurant in Green Forest, Cresthaven Courts in Harrison, and she worked at Walker's Nursing Home in Miami, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lona, son, Eudene and daughter-in-law, Maurine, three brothers, John, Guy and Lenard, two sisters, Mary Nelson and Naomi Watson. She is survived by one son, Johnie, two daughters, Lona Mae O'Neal of Texas, LaDena Nicholson of Alpena, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the Alpena Baptist Church with Bro. Lannie Younger officiating. Interment followed in the Alpena Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service. Online condolences may be sent to the family at nelsonfuneral.com.
